Departure of tower crane at Highland Hospital marks project milestone

A 220-foot tower crane has been a mainstay on the campus of the University of Rochester’s Highland Hospital since a 4-story, 80,000-SF vertical expansion to the hospital’s southeast wing began in the fall of 2021. With the project nearing completion, crews began dismantling the crane earlier this month.

By adding vertically to the southeast tower, the hospital has been able to increase space without having to expand its footprint. Three of the new floors will provide space for approximately 58 new private patient rooms, while one floor provides space for future build-out.

�� is CM-at-Risk for the expansion project, which also included approximately 10,000 SF of renovations to the existing building to accommodate connection to the new tower. The �� project team is led by Vice President Kevin Hoffman and Senior Project Manager John Grande.

Progress being made at the UAlbany SEFCU Arena

Great progress is being made at the project at the University at Albany. Steel for the upper level is currently underway and crews expect to be infilling with concrete soon.

��’s NY Capital Region is the general contractor for rehabilitation of the existing 40,000-SF athletic arena. Once updated the new facility will feature two new team locker rooms, film room, player lounge and kitchen.

The new facility will seat up to 3,400 spectators. The project, which started in August, is expected to be completed in late 2023.

Ribbon cutting held for Niagara University’s Kiernan Center

On January 19, ��’s Buffalo office helped celebrate the unveiling of the Kiernan Recreation Center at Niagara University.

This newly renovated 43,590-SF facility offers recreational athletics and health/wellness programs to the students, faculty, and community members. Additionally, the facility has space used by several academic departments each semester as part of their curriculum.

�� served as the general contractor on the renovation project, which included an 18,000-SF, two-story addition with a new weight room, sports medicine suite, advanced dance studios, field and classroom storage, athletic locker rooms, team meeting space, and recreation offices. The project also included enhancements to the existing facility.

�� employees, Chad Gaston, Jerrod Garret and Cole Garrett participated in the Project Healing Waters Annual Military and Veteran Fly-Fishing weekend. This program is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings. For many participants, socialization and camaraderie are just as important as the fishing outings. Veterans came from Binghamton, Buffalo, Oswego, Fort Drum, Rochester, and Syracuse.

On October 26, the �� Southeast team and helped kick off the construction of the new
Murray-Massenburg Elementary School With our partners at Durham Public Schools and EVOKE Studio Architecture, PLLC. The new, three-story, 134,000-SF facility will house 800 students from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. As DPS Executive Director of Building Services Fredrick Davis noted at the ceremony, the team is ready to deliver on the project’s mission: “To imagine, design and construct an environmentally responsible and transformative elementary school that ignites the natural curiosity of children and serves as a beacon that cultivates the limitless potential of our students.”

�� launches third annual Building Leaders program

�� recently launched the third year of its Building Leaders program in partnership with . The program, customized for ��, consists of eight sessions held over three months. Topics center on developing communication and speaking skills, strengthening people skills, building confidence and other key aspects of leadership.

The current class includes 20 participants representing 13 different regional and functional groups. Senior Trainer Kevin Lipomi, Tyler Nash, and Sean Fitzpatrick are conducting the sessions. Learning is reinforced by hands-on exercises, use of real-world examples, and encouragement from peers and leaders.

The program will conclude on November 30 with a celebration where each graduate will have an opportunity to share the impact this program has made.

In conjunction with Careers in Construction Month, Samantha Ciulla and Frank Tortora represented �� at the at the Monroe County Fleet Center. The event introduces students to various career opportunities in the construction industry. Hundreds of students attended, participating in hands-on activities, equipment trials and demonstrations. Representatives from construction firms, universities, and apprenticeship programs came together to showcase what the regional construction industry has to offer.

Groundbreaking kicks off Garner Medical Office project at Duke

On October 6, the �� Southeast team helped kick off construction of Duke Health’s Garner Medical Office Building. The event was attended by representatives from Duke Health, design firm Little and engineering/consulting firm NV5 as well as ��. The project will include an initial 60,000-SF medical office building and 3,000-SF central energy plant housing two 750-ton chillers and two 4800-MBH boilers.

�� women mentor student team in Saratoga Shed Build event

On October 8, the �� New York Capital Region participated in the Saratoga Showcase of Homes Women in Trades Shed Build event. At the well-attended event, teams of ninth- and tenth- grade female students from six local school districts partnered with construction professionals to build 4’ x 8’ lean-to-sheds. The intent was to inspire the next generation of female builders.

�� Project Manager Kaleigh Kupiec, Project Manager Erica McCarthy, and Project Administrator Suzanne Albrecht worked with a team from the Corinth Central School District. All agreed it was a great experience and that they would be happy to participate again in the future.

Thanks to Erica, Kaleigh and Suzanne for spending their Saturday working with the students. Also thanks to Project Superintendents Americo DiCocco and Fred Perotti for lending a hand, and to Curtis Lumber and WSWHE BOCES for sponsoring the event. The finished sheds are being auctioned off during the Showcase of Homes event with the proceeds being donated to charities and the Workforce Development Coalition.
