University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill | Avery Residence Hall Renovation and Addition
Originally built in the 1950s, UNC Chapel Hill’s Avery Residence Hall needed an upgrade. This project converted the building – which was previously being conditioned with radiators and window units – to central heating and air. Important structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical upgrades were made throughout the building to support the new system.
Existing corridors and egress pathways were also upgraded to improve comfort and usability for students. Select existing suite-style dormitories were converted into accessible suites – two on each floor. The ground floor of the building was converted to accommodate the new mechanical room as well as office space for the Carolina Housing facilities team and a breakroom for the housekeeping team.
Additionally, a 4,570-SF expansion added a new elevator tower to provide ADA accessibility within the facility, while also adding new lounge and community kitchen spaces on each floor.
