Sienna Realty | John Kam Building Historic Renovation
This project redeveloped the historic John Kam Malt House into a residential community featuring 86 apartments and commercial spaces while preserving the building’s industrial character and many of its historic architectural features.
Originally constructed in 1901 to support Buffalo’s brewing industry, the approximately 170,000-SF facility was comprised of a malt house, kiln building, workhouse and office. The project converted these former industrial spaces into unique loft-style apartments with shared amenities. Within the building, there are 41 apartment layouts, and each apartment is unique – featuring one or more original elements, such as restored wood floors or built-in window seats. Exposed brick walls, arched windows and large open areas highlight the structure’s original construction while providing contemporary living environments for residents. The scope also included a new elevator and stair tower.
Today, the revitalized complex offers modern housing while preserving an important piece of Buffalo’s history. The project brings new life to a long-vacant structure – showcasing the building’s historic craftsmanship and contributing to the ongoing revitalization of Buffalo’s waterfront and surrounding neighborhood.
